Dark worlds await

A taste of "Ask for the Moon"

With the year coming to a close we thought this would be a nice time to give you an opportunity to get to know us better. In our shows we generally stay in-character, which means that you get very few opportunities to learn about who we are as people. In our Patreon feed we have a Q&A show called "Ask for the Moon", in which we answer questions asked by our patrons. We have a lot of fun doing this and it hopefully also offers a view in to who we are and how we think. Here is an episode from November which we thought could be a nice teaser for what awaits over on Patreon.

Ask for the Moon is available at the 1 dollar per month level and we release one episode every month. Head over to Patreon, help the show and help us make more of this lovely content.

Curse of Strahd 39: Dien Bien Phu

In March of 1954 France was at war with the Viet Minh independence movement in French Indochina. The first Indochina war had been going since 1946 and the French were planning to cut off Viet Minh supply lines going into Laos and tactically draw the Viet Minh in to a major confrontation to end the conflict once and for all.

France opted to fight at a fortress they built at Dien Bien Phu, deep in the hills of northwestern Vietnam. The fortress would be resupplied by air as the French were convinced the Viet Minh possessed no anti-air capabilities. The Viet Minh swiftly moved to surround the French and positioned heavy artillery and anti-aircraft guns all around the fortress, having pushed these up the slopes of the mountains overlooking the French positions and dug tunnels through the mountain.

On March 13th the Viet Minh opened fire upon the French positions and with the artillery spread out around the mountains the French could not mount any counter-battery fire. The French artillery commander committed suicide in desperation and while the French troops repulsed wave after wave of attacks by the Viet Minh they eventually ran out of supplies, the air drops being fewer and fewer as the Viet Minh anti-aircraft guns took out supply planes during every run.

After a two month siege the French forces surrendered, the government resigned and France withdrew from Indochina, separating the country in two at the 17th parallel. One war ends... another one begins.

The Island of the Dead 06: Tonton Macoute

Having survived a coup d’etat attempt in 1958, the dictator of Haiti, Francois Duvalier, known as "Papa Doc", created a paramilitary force in 1959 to keep him safe from future coup attempts.

They were called the "Cagoulards", the hooded men, and were authorized to do whatever necessary to suppress political opposition. They are behind an unknown number of murders, often with a machete, at other times stoning and burning people alive. They would frequently leave the corpse of their victims on display, anyone attempting to remove the body would find themselves “disappeared” soon as well.

The force got the nickname “Tonton Macoute” after a mythological Haitian bogeyman. The Tonton Macoute was said to kidnap and punish unruly children during the night by snaring them in a gunny sack (Macoute in French) and carrying them off, eating them for breakfast. They reveled in this reputation and began wearing clothes inspired by Haitian Vodou to instill fear by alluding to having supernatural power.

Perhaps the most stunning fact about the Tonton Macoute is a man called Luckner Cambronne, who led the force during the 60’s and 70’s. He was known as the “Vampire of the Carribean” as he would extort blood plasma from locals and sell it to American labs. He would also sell dead bodies to the US, buying them from local hospitals for 3 dollars apiece. When the hospitals ran out he would raid local funeral parlors.

Curse of Strahd 38: Filicide

Filicide is the act of killing your own son or daughter. Five major reasons for the act have been identified and categorized by psychiatrists.

One is ”altruistic”, believing that it would be in the child’s best interest, for example if the child is terminally ill or the parent intends to kill themselves and don’t want the children left alone in what they consider a cruel world. Another reason is “acute psychosis”, for example believing that your child is possessed by an evil spirit and a danger. Then there are “unwanted children”, regarded as a hindrance by the parent. There are also "accidental killings", usually a result of physical abuse without the intent of murder. Finally there is "spousal revenge", such as in the Greek story of Medea who exacted revenge on her husband Jason by killing their children.

In the US alone about 500 children are killed each year by their parents with the mother being close to as likely to commit the horrendous act as the father.

The Island of the Dead 05: Fawcett

In 1925 Lieutenant Colonel Percy Fawcett set out on an expedition in to the jungles of Brazil, looking for an ancient lost city that he had named “Z”.

His son Jack and one of Jack’s friends joined Fawcett for the expedition as well as two Brazilian laborers, two horses, eight mules and two dogs. They had opted to keep the expedition small so not to disturb the natives who were generally hostile to outsiders. On May 29th they entered the unexplored territories… never to return.

The final fate of the expedition is unclear but it is believed that they were likely killed by one of the native tribes. Some of their belonging also surfaced, having been given as gifts to tribal leaders.

Curse of Strahd 37: Snap! Crackle! Pop!

On January 3, 1943 the 360th Bomb Squadron of the US Air Force was conducting a daylight bombing raid over St. Nazaire in France, attempting to take out German submarine yards. Alan Magee was a ball turret gunner in one the B-17 bombers joining the dangerous raid.

The bomber took fire from German fighters which shot off parts of the right wing, sending the plane in to a deadly spin. Magee had no choice but to jump out of the plane… without a parachute. Convinced this was the end he welcomed the loss of consciousness that the rapid descent gave him.

He could not believe his eyes when he later woke up being patched up by German doctors. He had smashed through the glass ceiling of the St. Nazaire train station which had ended up breaking his fall. He had broken his right leg, almost severed his right arm and had 28 shrapnel wounds from shards of glass – but he was alive... having survived a fall of more than 6000 meters.

The Island of the Dead 04: Koteka

The Koteka is a sheath worn by males in some tribes in New Guinea to cover their genitals. Normally made from a dried out gourd they are held in place by loops of fiber attached to the body. During work normally a shorter sheath is utilized with longer more elaborate sheaths used during festivities.

While it’s easy to assume the Koteka has some form of sexual meaning the locals are adamant that it is purely worn as a way of covering themselves.

An attempt to eradicate the practice was made in the 1970’s with authorities encouraging the natives to use modern clothing like shorts and shirts. However the locals were unfamiliar with the care of such clothes and did not wash them, leading to skin diseases.

The use of these kinds of sheaths has been documented outside of New Guinea as well with some native South American tribes and tribes in tropical Africa also reportedly having used them. It is unclear where the practice originated.

LOCATION: BLACK HARBOR
P.O.C: NEMERYA
DESCRIPTION (FORWARDED BY P.O.C):
Seven cycles ago, during the last true cycle, several pieces of A.I. disappeared for reasons unknown. The Elder Council believes that this is somehow related to a more recent event: the vanishing of Kiara, Mergo and Raphael – three local kids that used to roam in the outskirts.

I need you to find them.

Bring them home and, if possible, find out what might have happened with the A.I’s.

We had the amazing opportunity to play the upcoming Nibiru - a sci-fi RPG of lost memories with its creator Federico Sohns as our GM. Nibiru is on Kickstarter now, check it out here:

Curse of Strahd 36: Li's Field

The island of Hong Kong is in the middle of an area with very heavy cyclone activity and many of the neighboring countries are ravaged by frequent storms. This was the case in 2010 for example when the Severe Tropical Storm Lionrock impacted Taiwan and Fujian in China.

When looking at the path of the cyclone however, something looks strange, it’s as if the storm is repelled and unable to approach Hong Kong but able to move north right after passing it. Similar movements happened to typhoon Cimaron in 2006.

This has created a conspiracy theory that says that Hong Kong is protected by a force field created by the tycoon and billionaire Li Ka-Shing, specifically designed to repel severe weather like this.

At a survey conducted at a student forum in 2014, about 20% of respondents believed that “Li’s Field”, as it is known, did indeed exist.

The Island of the Dead 03: Faber

In June 1942 the 3rd fighter group of the 2nd fighter wing of the Luftwaffe was scrambled to intercept a force of six returning A-20 Havoc bombers. The bombers were escorted by the 310th, 312th and 313th squadron of the RAF, all manned by Czech pilots.

The Luftwaffe was flying the brand new Focke-Wulf 190 and downed seven Spitfires, one in spectacular fashion when Oberleutnant Armin Faber, with only one cannon working, made an Immelmann turn in to the sun and shot down his pursuer head on.

Faber however had become severely disoriented during the dogfight and separated from the rest of the squadron and mistook the Bristol Channel for the English Channel and ended up flying north instead of south, mistaking the south of Wales for France.

Witnesses could hardly believe their eyes when seeing the German plane waggling its wings in a victory celebration and then landing on the training airfield at RAF Pembrey. This being a training airfield, not many weapons were available and duty pilot Sergeant Jeffreys had to jump up on the wing of the plane and take Faber prisoner with a flare gun.

Taroticum 03: Cat o' Nine Tails

The cat o’ nine tails is a whip with nine “claws”, knotted thongs of cotton cord, designed to lacerate the skin in parallel wounds. It was used for corporal punishment, for example in the Royal Navy, where flogging was regularly administered for drunkenness or striking an officer. These offenses could give you a dozen lashes whereas desertion, mutiny or theft could give you up to five hundred. In the case of the “offense” of sodomy the death penalty was normally administered, but an alternative to this was awarding one thousand lashes – something that carried a similar chance of survival.

“Flogging around the fleet” was the severest form of flogging where the offender was rowed between the ships in port, being flogged at each ship. This continued over months and years until the sailor died. After having endured each round of punishment the sailor’s back was rinsed with seawater which was then mistakenly thought to help reduce the risk of infection.

The expression “rubbing salt into his wounds” is said to come from this practice.

Nibiru. A massive space station, submerged under the sea of debris orbiting the Star of Fomalhaut: A steel-clad vulture feeding of the corpse of a thousand unborn planets.

The Skyless World, safeguarding a collection of enclosed city-states—civilizations that have endured for thousands of years. From the Core and the Antumbra, where the world's benign and all is light, through the Penumbra and the Umbra beyond, where light ends, and the station's artificial gravity crushes all.

In the far corners of this outlandish place, a group of amnesiacs wanders through the land. Theirs are the tales of loss, struggle and remembrance. Theirs are the stories you will tell.

Curse of Strahd 35: R.U.R

In Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti, a play from 1920 by Karel Capek, we are introduced to the idea of artificial people called roboti that are used as workers. The R.U.R factory makes these roboti from synthetic flesh and blood, even enabling them to think for themselves and be mistaken for human. The word "robot", especially its use in sci-fi, come from these roboti.

As has become the pattern for most western stories involving robots these creatures end up rebelling against their human masters and end up wiping out the human race.

Robots as a form of hubris by humans playing god, and being used as a warning against that, is in stark contrast to for example Japanese stories about robots where they are frequently seen as heroes or saviors rather than threats.

The Island of the Dead 02: Champawat

In the beginning of the 1900’s the villagers in Rupal in western Nepal were being routinely attacked and eaten by a Bengal tigress. The attacks happened in broad daylight and life across the region became paralyzed as men refused to leave their huts for fear of the attacks.

Hunters and soldiers were sent after the tiger and managed to chase her into India, where she began her killing yet again. When finally shot in 1907 it was estimated that she had killed 436 people.

The Strand was a monthly magazine published from 1891 to 1950 featuring fiction, illustrations and puzzles. At its peak it sold half a million copies every month.

Sir Athur Conan Doyle’s character Sherlock Holmes began its life in The Strand through the serialization of “The Hounds of Baskervilles” and it was during that time the magazine reached its peak in sales. Other contributors included Rudyard Kipling, Winston Churchill and even Queen Victoria herself.

Curse of Strahd 34: Earl of Cornwall

Piers Gaveston was a nobleman, earl of Cornwall and favorite of King Edward II of England. The two were like brothers, inseparable and the king relied upon Gaveston as a sort of deputy, although he had no such official title.

The two were even so close that rumors began to fly about them being lovers, something that later chroniclers have reinforced. This, and more importantly Gaveston’s exclusive access to the king’s patronage, led the king to be pressured by the nobility in to sending Gaveston away in exile a total of three times. The final time Gaveston was told that he would be branded an outlaw if he returned, and when he still did he was hunted down and murdered by a group of nobles.

Curse of Strahd 33: The Hussite Wars

In 1402 the Bohemian priest and scholar Jan Hus denounced the Catholic Church as corrupt and began preaching about reformation of the church in the land. The people listened as the church was indeed corrupt and so many, especially Czech’s, supported this cause that the pope ultimately had to declare a crusade against these “Hussites” who had even had the gall to occupy the castles of Prague.

Using modern weaponry like hand cannons and well thought out battle tactics the Hussites defeated five consecutive crusades sent against them and became a sort of spontaneous military power in the region.

The Hussite movement would ultimately fall from within when a moderate and radical faction, the Utraquists and Taborites, ended up fighting a war that weakened both sides, ultimately allowing Polish troops under Wladyslaw III to defeat the Hussites at the Battle of Grotniki in 1439.
