D&D - The Styes, Part 1: City on the Water

Issue 121 of the very much missed "Dungeon Magazine" contained a fantastic adventure for D&D 3rd edition called "The Styes", that took place in a dark and dreary port town plagued by mysterious murders. On Tuesday the 21st of May the new D&D 5th edition module "Ghosts of Saltmarsh" will be released and The Styes is one of the many classic adventures that have been included.

To celebrate this new launch we made our own conversion of the old adventure and ran it as a one-shot. Enjoy part one here and do check out Ghosts of Saltmarsh!

KULT: And the Rocket's Red Glare, with Rollspelsklubben

"The Trump campaign is getting ready to make its final push towards the White House. For months, he has been playing to the basest urges of the American populace: the need for more. More safety, more money, more guns, more of everything. His followers have been whipped into a frenzy, waiting to strike at the polls. The whole country is wound as tight as a fiddle-string, and that’s exactly the way Trump wants it.

Maybe you needed the university credits. Maybe your parents supported his campaign and had an “in”. For whatever reason, you were one of the few chosen to intern in the executive half of the campaign, with Trump himself. It was stressful, and that’s what you expected. His smiles are a little too wide, his words are a little too rushed, and his running mate is a little too quiet. That’s all normal, right? It’s just stress. Stress will make you see things that aren’t there – especially on election night."

We had the amazing privilege of recording the talented Jacqueline Bryk's new KULT: Divinity Lost scenario "And the Rocket's Red Glare", together with Isak Jansson from Sweden's largest actual play podcast "Rollspelsklubben" as a guest player. Joining us was also our dear friend Jenny Bremberg.

The scenario is for sale in Helmgast's webshop here:
https://webshop.helmgast.se/kult/and-the-rockets-red-glare-digital-pdf.html

NOTE: This scenario is a work of fiction. All incidents and dialogue, and all characters with the exception of some well-known historical figures, are products of the scenario’s creator and are not to be construed as real. Where real life historical figures appear, the situations, incidents, and dialogues concerning those persons are almost entirely fictional and are not intended to depict actual events or to change the entirely fictional nature of this story.

This is fake news, but we hope you will enjoy it.

Stormbringer, with The Grognard Files

We are very happy and pleased to bring you this special episode of Red Moon Roleplaying where we got to play Chaosium's Stormbringer RPG from 1981. The game is written by industry legends Ken St. Andre and Steve Perrin, and is based on Michael Moorcock's works about Elric of Melniboné, the albino sorcerer who wields the enchanted black blade named Stormbringer. A blade that feeds off of blood and souls.

Gamemaster for this session was none other than Dirk the Dice from the excellent podcast The Grognard Files, a show that talk bobbins about table-top RPGs from back in the day and today. We are big fans and would definitely recommend you check the show out if you are interested in those magical games that built the hobby in the 80's. You can find the show here: https://thegrognardfiles.com

For now we wish you a pleasant journey to the Young Kingdoms!

DEGENESIS: Voltaic

We got the great opportunity to play the gorgeous primal punk RPG DEGENESIS by SIXMOREVODKA with Kyle Willey, who is a freelancer on the game, as our Gamemaster.

500 years have passed since a swarm of asteroids ushered in the end humanity. Earth is engulfed by a new ice age. But Mankind hasn‘t given up just yet. From the ashes of a destroyed civilization, a new one has risen. Cults, clans and tribes are fighting for dominance in a world that is being reborn. Apocalyptic sects raise fortresses in the landscape. Clans form new cities. Border towns rise from the settling asteroid dust. A whole people are on the move to harvest the artifacts of the lost generations. To rebuild earth in a new and glorious fashion.

But in the shadows of the craters something is moving. A strange virus that was traveling underneath the icy shell of the asteroids has started infecting humanity‘s DNA. The virus, called the Primer, is starting to mutate people who get in touch with it, transforming them, turning them into a new apex predator, a new race of human beings.

It‘s the birth of Homo Degenesis."

Runequest: Contested Ground, with Jason Durall

At Dragonmeet we had the amazing opportunity to finally earn our name and to play the latest edition of the classic fantasy RPG RuneQuest by Chaosium. The adventure is called "Contested Ground" and is set in the lands of Old Tarsh in Glorantha, the amazing setting created by Greg Stafford. Gamemaster is none other than the line editor for RuneQuest over at Chaosium, Jason Durall.

Hjalmar takes the role of the warrior Arim, and Craig the bandit Ilaro, both of the Dolutha clan of the Hindarli Tribe. The two will represent their clan in an honor duel against the Two Brothers Clan and at stake is control of the important Storm's Eye watchtower. Things... will not go as planned.

Nibiru: Kimera 02 with Federico Sohns

JOB CODE: #27AC3
LOCATION: BLACK HARBOR
P.O.C: NEMERYA
DESCRIPTION (FORWARDED BY P.O.C):
Seven cycles ago, during the last true cycle, several pieces of A.I. disappeared for reasons unknown. The Elder Council believes that this is somehow related to a more recent event: the vanishing of Kiara, Mergo and Raphael – three local kids that used to roam in the outskirts.

I need you to find them.

Bring them home and, if possible, find out what might have happened with the A.I’s.

We had the amazing opportunity to play the upcoming Nibiru - a sci-fi RPG of lost memories with its creator Federico Sohns as our GM. Nibiru is on Kickstarter now, check it out here:

Nibiru. A massive space station, submerged under the sea of debris orbiting the Star of Fomalhaut: A steel-clad vulture feeding of the corpse of a thousand unborn planets.

The Skyless World, safeguarding a collection of enclosed city-states—civilizations that have endured for thousands of years. From the Core and the Antumbra, where the world's benign and all is light, through the Penumbra and the Umbra beyond, where light ends, and the station's artificial gravity crushes all.

In the far corners of this outlandish place, a group of amnesiacs wanders through the land. Theirs are the tales of loss, struggle and remembrance. Theirs are the stories you will tell.

We had the honor of welcoming the Swedish RPG legend Anders Blixt on the show. Anders has 42 years of experience in the RPG business and is the man behind Drakar och Demoner Expert and a whole heap of fantastic Swedish games. In this interview we talk about the module “The Kin-strife” that came out in 1995 for Middle-earth Roleplaying (MERP) that he was the project leader for.

The One Ring: The Kin-strife

We have something special for you today. We have played the short adventure “The distressed husband” from the classic MERP module “The Kin-strife” using the rules from The One Ring by Cubicle 7. "The Kin-strife" is a module about the civil war in Gondor between traditionalists and loyalists that took place about 1600 years before the events in “Lord of the Rings”.

“But Valacar far exceeded his father’s designs. He grew to love the Northern lands and people, and he married Vidumavi, daughter of Vidugavia…”
“Therefore when Eldacar succeeded his father there was war in Gondor. But Eldacar did not prove easy to thrust from his heritage. To the lineage of Gondor he added the fearless spirit of the Northmen. He was handsome and valiant, and showed no sign of ageing more swiftly than his father. When the confederates led by the descendants of the kings rose against him, he opposed them to the end of his strength. At last he was besieged in Osgiliath, and held it long, until hunger and the greater forces of the rebels drove him out, leaving the city in flames. In that siege and burning the Tower of the Stone of Osgiliath was destroyed, and the palantir was lost in the waters.”

KULT: Divinity Lost - Oakwood Heights, Act III

Zug Island is a man-made island in the river Rouge in the southern part of Detroit. It’s home to a large ironmaking industry with massive blast furnaces. Ore and coal is brought to the island via train and pig iron and coke shipped out. At its peak thousands of people worked there, today only a few hundred, mainly due to automatization and the decline in manufacturing throughout the rust belt.

The ”Zug Island hum” are mysterious cyclical rumblings and vibrations that can be felt as far away eighty kilometers away. It is believed they are emanating from the iron-making facilities, but studies are inconclusive and the city has cancelled further investigations due to the general lack of funds.

KULT: Divinity Lost - Oakwood Heights, Act II

Oakwood Heights is in the heavily industrialized southwestern part of Detroit. The neighborhood is relatively densely populated but also ranks as the most polluted in all of Michigan. The population has dropped by more than 20% since the year 2000 and is 75% African-American with almost 30% of all residents living below the poverty line.

Most states have regulations regarding how close industries can be to residential areas, but not Michigan. The Marathon Petroleum Company is located right by the neighborhood and long-term residents, unsurprisingly, have higher levels of respiratory diseases and cancer.

In 2010 the Detroit Free Press reported this about the area “For the past six months, a rain of mysterious sparkly dust of unknown origin has landed on their homes and gardens. Odd odors and clouds of dark particles float overhead”.

Tales from the Loop: Horror Movie Mayhem, Part 2 of 2

Moral panic was widespread fear and social concern of a, usually hitherto unknown, evil that threatened society and preferably the innocent children. The fear was spread by ”moral entrepreneurs” as well as the mass media.

Often it related to new phenomena that young people enjoyed, such as heavy metal music, roleplaying games or video nasties. Moral panic could also be generated targeting groups that were seen as threats to social norms in a community, outsiders like mods and rockers or the LGBT community.

It’s good that we have gotten past this as a society… now it will never happen again.

KULT: Divinity Lost - Oakwood Heights, Act I

We are big fans of the wonderful people over at Encounter Roleplay who stream tremendous amounts of high quality roleplaying goodness every week, both in their own Twitch channel as well as the official DnD-channel. They also produce two top-class podcasts with a fairly similar tone to ours, "Turncloaks" and "Tomes & Tentacles", that we can heartily recommend.

We recently had the opportunity to do a collaboration with Josh and Tallsquall from Encounter Roleplay and our own DM extraordinaire Craig decided to take them to the lovely neighborhood of Oakwood Heights, Detroit in the year 2015. Enjoy!

"It is a grey and cold winter’s day in Detroit, as members of the public prosecutor’s office and police force shepherd the accused Franklin Mills around his crime scenes, located throughout the city. The objective is to attain clarity of what happened on that fateful day back in August, the motive behind the cruel murders, the child who disappeared, and whether Franklin Mills really lost his memory."

Tales from the Loop: Horror Movie Mayhem, Part 1 of 2

We are joined by the talented Gabrielle De Bourg who GM's Hjalmar and Craig through "Horror Movie Mayhem", an adventure she has created for the game "Tales from the Loop" by Free League that is included in the module "Our Friends the Machines & Other Mysteries"

"It is the summer of 1988, 30 years ago today, and the Parent Teacher Association are about to hold a Culture Festival in the little society of Stenhamra on Mälaröarna to celebrate the fine culture offerings in the area.

But as soon as it has begun, notes are landing in the mailboxes and adults are going door-to-door. Because there is one type of culture that they think is dangerous. Everywhere they are talking about the Video Nasties and how it's making the children violent.

But is there something more hidden behind it all? Come along for an adventure about moral panic, LGBT and paranoia in Simon Stålenhags 80's that never was in this Horror Movie Mayhem."
