Taroticum 04: Lee-Metford

It's been a few months ago since we checked in with our Patreon bonus campaign "Taroticum" for KULT: Divinity Lost. Having left you on a dreadful cliffhanger we thought it would be nice to give you closure to the prologue.

We released the ninth episode of the campaign on the five dollar per month level on Patreon today so you can enjoy a nice KULT binge if you back us there. Your support allows us to spend more time on the show and really means a great deal to us!

TAROTICUM 04: Lee-Metford
The Lee-Metford rifle was a bolt-action rifle that replaced the aging breech-loaded Martini-Henry rifle as the British Army's service rifle in 1888. It was much faster than the Martini-Henry and the bolt's rotation was only 60 degrees compared to the 90 degrees of similar German and French rifles. It had one major drawback however and that was its reliance on the extremely smoky black powder as a propellant. The rifle was supposed to utilize cordite which is smokeless, but production delays made the makers of the rifle have to rely on black powder.

In 1896 the Lee-Metford was phased out in favour of the Lee-Enfield rifle, which used smokeless powder and is still utilized to this day with units in especially the developing countries of the commonwealth.

During World War 2 the Lee-Metford found itself converted in to an automatic rifle in New Zealand and Australia due to the lack of Bren and Lewis guns. The Lee-Metford remains in use by one unit today, the Atholl Highlanders in Scotland.

"Faraday" by Anders Fager, Full Story

If you missed our "Taroticum" prologue "Faraday", written by Anders Fager, or found the chapter-length releases too short to get into, we are now happy to release the full story for your enjoyment in one easily digestible half hour.

Follow the life and unlife of Rupert Faraday as he observes the apex and fall of the British Empire, reminisces about his time with Anthony Seymour and learn some of the secrets of the powerful cards of the Tarotica.

Anders Fager has written the excellent KULT novel ”For the Love of Goddess” that will be published by Perilous Worlds in English during autumn 2019 and was released in Swedish last year by Fria Ligan. He has a long history in the RPG business going back to the days of Äventyrsspel (Target Games) and has also written for Tales from the Loop, Mutant Chronicles: Siege of the Citadel and is perhaps most famous for being the man behind the “Svenska Kulter” horror series that mixes Nordic Noir with the Lovecraftian mythos.

You can find out more about Anders Fager on his Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/fagerofficial/

Taroticum 03: Cat o' Nine Tails

The cat o’ nine tails is a whip with nine “claws”, knotted thongs of cotton cord, designed to lacerate the skin in parallel wounds. It was used for corporal punishment, for example in the Royal Navy, where flogging was regularly administered for drunkenness or striking an officer. These offenses could give you a dozen lashes whereas desertion, mutiny or theft could give you up to five hundred. In the case of the “offense” of sodomy the death penalty was normally administered, but an alternative to this was awarding one thousand lashes – something that carried a similar chance of survival.

“Flogging around the fleet” was the severest form of flogging where the offender was rowed between the ships in port, being flogged at each ship. This continued over months and years until the sailor died. After having endured each round of punishment the sailor’s back was rinsed with seawater which was then mistakenly thought to help reduce the risk of infection.

The expression “rubbing salt into his wounds” is said to come from this practice.

Taroticum 02: The Strand

The Strand was a monthly magazine published from 1891 to 1950 featuring fiction, illustrations and puzzles. At its peak it sold half a million copies every month.

Sir Athur Conan Doyle’s character Sherlock Holmes began its life in The Strand through the serialization of “The Hounds of Baskervilles” and it was during that time the magazine reached its peak in sales. Other contributors included Rudyard Kipling, Winston Churchill and even Queen Victoria herself.

Taroticum 01: Sanburn 1892

It’s the 22nd of December 1892 at Sandburn prison in Clapham in the southwest of London. It’s almost Christmas… and a hell of a time to be burying a body.

Thus begins our journey through the legendary KULT campaign “Taroticum”, written in 1992 by none other than our favorite people Gunilla Jonsson and Michael Petersén.

Taroticum is our second Patreon bonus campaign and this is the first of three episodes that will be released for all of our listeners so that you can get a taste of it. On the five dollar level on Patreon you can already find episode 2 and 3 as well as the full first three play sessions in raw format.
